Strategic Update: Shifting Focus to FP530 (forazemin)
As CEO of Flightpath Biosciences, I want to share an important update regarding our choice to refocus the company’s efforts on our new lead drug candidate, FP530 (forazemin), and to step back, for now, from further development of our earlier candidate, FP100 (hygromycin A).
Lessons Learned from FP100 (hygromycin A)
When we first advanced FP100, we did so because it represented a bold, targeted approach to Borrelia infections and aligned with our shared goal with patients and clinicians: a more precise, potentially more effective way to treat Lyme disease. In early clinical work, however, we learned hard but crucial lessons. FP100 showed limited oral bioavailability in humans, meaning too little of the drug reached the bloodstream and tissues at levels needed for robust, reliable clinical benefit. This raised concerns about whether it could reliably deliver the clinical benefits patients need. As patient advocates and developers, we must follow the data even when it means difficult decisions. FP100 did not meet the bar we believe Lyme patients deserve: consistent efficacy, ease of administration, and long-term viability as a broadly accessible medicine.
FP530 (forazemin): A New Direction
Our decision to prioritize FP530 (forazemin) is intended to focus our efforts on bringing the best potential product to patients. FP530 is a potentially much more bioavailable, bactericidal antibiotic designed to kill disease-relevant Borrelia and other pathogens more completely and efficiently, with a microbiome-sparing profile. In preclinical work and early clinical studies, FP530 has demonstrated strong systemic exposure, favorable pharmacology, and a potency profile that gives us hope it can achieve therapeutic levels where it matters most in the body.
As a next step, the company expects to enter a phase I healthy volunteer study to assess safety and tolerability with an oral formulation this year.
